Pencils are being sharpened, crayons are lined up neatly in boxes, and blank notebooks are awaiting fresh notes. However, this August the back-to-school rush looks a little different from the typical fall frenzy of children toting new lunch boxes and backpacks racing to greet their friends on the playground. Instead, laptops are being flipped open and children are being welcomed back to school virtually.

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to help relieve a bit of the stress parents and their children might be feeling during this unconventional school year by offering SoCal students and families free back to school supplies. Each student was surprised with a Helpful Honda Pencil Pouch complete with pencils, pens, erasers, sharpeners, rulers, notebooks, and colored pencils. Plus, every student was also gifted their very own “Helpful” blue mask.

We popped up across a multitude of schools in the Southland to host drive-through school supply drives which allowed families to safely and easily grab necessary supplies for their students. In Los Angeles, a school administrator thanked us for our generosity during these unimaginable times, “These supplies are going to help our students a lot. We have a lot of struggling families.” Teachers across the country are dedicating hours of training time to ensure that students are able to stay engaged and gain knowledge throughout this difficult school year. In turn, we wanted to ensure that students would have the proper supplies they needed to succeed.

Squeals of excitement leaked from the students, “I love this pencil case, it’s so cute!” a little girl in Los Angeles exclaimed. Another student in Claremont held a notebook up to his nose inhaling deeply; “I love the smell of a fresh notebook.” While a mother accompanying her child said, “This is such a huge help. We go through so many colored pencils at our house, especially during quarantine,”

Families were grateful and relieved to have school supplies throughout this particularly difficult year, “We have three kids and they all love you guys so much. Thank you for being here. We were all so excited that you were going to be here,” said a mother in Anaheim.

As much as life has changed, some things remain the same: the pure joy and excitement of fresh school supplies and a new school year in the fall.
