Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. For the first time ever, the SoCal Honda Dealers joined in on the festivities by highlighting the importance of food, dance and film in Hispanic culture.
The Guys in Blue shared the tastes of Hispanic culture with the help of four of SoCal’s favorite food trucks: Guerilla Tacos, Tamarindo Truck, Kala Truck and Chancho’s Tacos. Lucky residents were treated to a variety of free food items like tacos, burritos, beans, chips, rice, salsa, carne asada fries and much more. Many of the guests were happily shocked with the free meal saying, “it’s cool to see Honda out here celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month” and “free tacos are the best tacos!”
The Helpful Honda Guys also provided a special Random Act of Helpfulness to the students of Canterbury Elementary School in Arleta by helping to carry on the tradition of Mexican folk dance, Folklorico. Ana Alfaro reached out to us through the Help Me Honda form on our website to ask for help for her colleague, Maria Felix. Ms. Felix volunteers her personal time to teach young girls how to dance Folklorico which emphasizes local folk culture with ballet characteristics such as pointed toes, exaggerated movements, and highly choreographed routines. Without sufficient funds to provide each of the 50 girls with their own dress, Ms. Felix was not able to accommodate many of the kids interested in participating. To help continue the Folklorico tradition, we purchased 50 traditional dresses for the girls and invited their friends and family to a special performance just for them! The families were delighted to see their daughters dancing beautifully on stage – “All these dresses are so nice!”
Then, we helped bring one last splash of Hispanic culture with a family friendly drive-in movie night. We celebrated the role of film in Hispanic tradition by inviting 400 of our lucky social media followers to a free movie at the Paramount Drive-In Theaters, complete with concession snacks, blankets and sugar skull face painting. The movie-goers were so thrilled with the free goodies, saying “movie, food, blanket and face painting, what else can we ask for tonight?” Families were also thankful for the free night of fun, mentioning “I haven’t been to the drive-in movies in years! Thank you for making it possible for my family and me to attend the drive-in for free. It was a nice treat!”
What’s next? ‘Tis almost the season for Happy Honda Days! Throughout November and December, the Guys in Blue will be rolling through SoCal in our Free Gas Tanker Truck to help Honda families save money at the pump during the busy travel season. The Helpful Honda Holiday Treats Truck will also be making special visits and surprising residents with tasty holiday treats like candy canes, cookies, and much more. If that wasn’t enough, make sure to keep an eye out at Christmas tree lots, as the Helpful Honda Elves may be bringing even more joy this season with free Christmas trees.
